Johnny Depp: Jupiter, Neptune & Saturn, Revisited

Some of you might remember those Neptune (in Pisces) and Saturn (then in Sagittarius) squares from 2016 — 3 particular aspects that spanned from late 2015 on. And some of you might also remember Jupiter was in Virgo, complicating matters by forming a T-square between these aspects.

In the recent Rolling Stone article, “The Trouble With Johnny Depp“, the writer Stephen Rodrick details the trials and tribulations surrounding the troubled Hollywood celebrity, and I couldn’t help but notice Depp experienced a series of turning points in his life during 2016 — namely, the death of his mother and the collapse of his marriage with Amber Heard. More than this as well — Depp’s lawyer Waldman became involved in his financial dealings, and litigation started in March 2016 against the team handling Depp’s finances.

Coincidence? I think not.

Reading the laundry list of Depp’s expenditures and alleged compulsive spending, it’s easy enough to see the influence of Jupiter all over his life. Jupiter is often given a free pass as a kind and benevolent force bestowing great gifts, but this ignores Jupiter’s down side: Jupiter expands the bad as well as the good. If you spent a nickel ordinarily, Jupiter and Neptune are going to want you to bet a million nickels on the horses, regardless of how bad the odds are.

Interestingly enough, one of the accusations is that Depp spent $30,000 monthly on wine — hello Neptune in Pisces — and when subject came up, Depp responded to the effect that it was much more than that! Jupiter and Neptune, indeed.

It’s not hard to see Saturn implicated in all of this. Saturn is the constraining force, Saturn is making his presence known from his debilitated space in Sagittarius, where the 9th house is key — a house of Jupiter. It would be hard to imagine anyone trying to put the brakes on their spending, their drinking, or their behavior during this time, and now that Saturn has moved into his home base of Capricorn, he will begin to draw blood and truly knuckle down, no longer having to war with the expansiveness of Jupiter by rulership.

While Saturn had still been in Sagittarius, it appears Depp made some token attempts to gain control over his expenditures, but with Saturn so debilitated, and under the influence of that Neptune square, everything must have been working against his intentions.

It’s a profound illustration that aspects from years past can have a ricochet effect into the future, and nowhere more potent than where Saturn happens to be, and where he is headed …

Sagittarius New Moon, 12-18-2017

Sagittarius New Moon

It’s the last new moon of 2017!

When I started this blog, I started out 2017 with a specific goal: post an astrological break down of each new and full moon. I kept my goal, and learned much more about the lunar cycles than I could have imagined, widening my understanding and sharing my insights with a wonderful audience.

As we close in on the last days of 2017, we have a chance to experience new beginnings. The sun and moon conjunct at 26 degrees of Sagittarius, that expansive sign of foreign travel and culture, higher education, and publishing.

In addition, Saturn is hinged on the 29th degree, hammering home the old saying that every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end; no less now as we prepare for Saturn to be ushered into Capricorn. Perhaps we are still tidying up retrograde messes from Saturn’s previous passage, or Mercury, who is still retrograde at 15 degrees Sagittarius. Yet, with Saturn closing in on the next sign, we may notice bigger shifts. Think back to when Saturn first entered Sagittarius in late 2015; I myself began a course of study that is now finishing. Others may notice that long term projects are coming to fruition, or nearing closure. It is time to consider what else we may want to build under this new moon, knowing that Capricorn is going to be a major transit in Saturn’s future.

And considering that the sun and moon are conjunct Saturn, it should be clear that our public and private life is supporting our potential new projects. Consider Capricorn’s earthy, practical nature and focus on career and ambitions to succeed. We may be considering how we can take the lessons of Sagittarius and apply them to our career field.

Significantly, Uranus is also at 24 degrees of Aries, and in nearly six months, he will be moving into earth-centered Taurus. For now, though, he’s making a trine to the sun and the moon, and a very loose trine to Saturn; we may see something unexpected come into our lives — for many, the holiday season might bring gifts we did not foresee, or the meeting of old friends and relatives we had thought were lost to us.

Venus at 21 degrees of Sagittarius is also making a trine to Uranus at 24 degrees of Aries, and so there might be matters of romance or fortune coming into play during the holiday season as well; keep the mood light hearted and steal a kiss beneath the mistletoe.

Neptune at 11 degrees Pisces will also form square with Mercury, retrograde at 15 degrees Sagittarius; this may indicate some difficulties with negotiations, contracts, or at the very least, unclear or fuzzy information which could also implicate media. It’s my understanding that recently, an article regarding a UFO was the headline “news” among several major newspapers — information acquired from a member of the band Blink 182. Given that this square with Neptune and this retrograde Mercury is happening in conjunction with the media covering this event, be aware that everything considered fit-to-print is not the whole story, and it comes with a strong whiff of delusion, if not outright distraction. Be advised to carefully vette what information you intend to make decisions based off of so you can take a proper heading and not be lost in the fog.

A compilation of the full and new moons of 2018 will be available in late 2017, called Lunations, 2018, which will be made available as an ebook.

Gemini Moon, 11 Degrees, 12-3-2017

Gemini Moon 12-3-17

This lunation sees the full moon at 11 degrees of Gemini, and the sun at 11 degrees of Sagittarius. This moon completes at cycle begun at the Gemini new moon of May 25, 2017. Ask yourself what was going on in your life during that week, and if any projects initiated then are reaching fruition now. You can read my post about that new moon here.

What makes this aspect doubly interesting is that we have Mercury in retrograde at 29 degrees of Sagittarius. Just when we though he was done being at his detriment in this sign, he’s going to be going back for another to trip to see what we missed, and conjunct Saturn at 28 degrees, preparing to move out of Sagittarius and into Capricorn by the end of December.

In the meantime, what this also means is that the moon in Gemini is, by rulership, under Mercury’s influence, so we look to Mercury’s condition to understand how our private lives will be affected, since the moon oversees our emotions, our behind the scenes life. We might expect a certain amount of bravado in our communications that lands us in trouble, committing to promises that are never lived up to, or worse, outright lying.

Meanwhile, the sun is moving through Sagittarius, highlighting our public life and social world with concerns belonging to Sagittarius – foreign culture and travel, publishing, and high education among others. Sagittarius is a light-hearted, happy-go-lucky sign, and we have Venus at 2 degrees, Mercury at 29 degrees retrograde, and Saturn at 28 degrees — all in Sagittarius! We will feel expanded in our personal lives for the moment, perhaps getting a lucky payment overseas, our communications buoyant and chatty. As in all periods of Mercury in retrograde, it is advisable to keep contracts at bay, especially if you are involved in publishing. New projects are not emphasized at this time.

Complicating our matters of communication with a Mercury at detriment and retrograde, our more significant aspects include a square to the sun and the moon from Neptune at 11 degrees Pisces. Neptune will provide the appropriate fog to make bad deals seem like great ideas, and buoyant Mercury could walk us right into a trap that could have been avoided with greater attention to detail. Approach communications with a healthy dose of skepticism; there could be more going on than is first apparent.

Mars at 26 degrees of Libra is still in detriment here, where he is forced to gaze upon his preferred sign, Aries. Mars prizes action and wants what he wants, and he wants it now; spouses might be prone to argue a little more than usual under this aspect, as Libra rules marriages and relationships, and Mars will not be inclined to negotiate.

Uranus at 24 degrees of Aries will be in opposition to Mars. This will increase a sense of tension and may encourage mishaps or accidents. Don’t push things; sometimes standing still without using force can give a better result, and this is one of those times. Nerves may fray under Uranus’s electrifying nature.

In addition, Uranus at 24 degrees of Aries forms a trine to Mercury in Sagittarius. This also encourages more velocity when it comes to communications and Uranus’s rebellious nature; and with Mercury already in enough trouble, rather than this trine being a calmer aspect, it can aggravate present circumstances and make events happen faster, whether it’s matter of being hoodwinked or a fender bender at a stoplight.

Black Moon Lilith has a fiery, taboo nature all her own, and this time around she is at 2 degrees of Capricorn, and conjunct Saturn and Mercury. This could indicate a powerful female presence, but it could also mean a more intense focus on all the sexual controversy that has been stirred by recent events in the news. With Saturn representing a patriarch, and Mercury stumbling in his messages, it will be interesting to see if all these elements are clashing as the Black Moon Liliths in our lives, our generation, are demanding justice for abuse of sex and power. Black Moon Lilith wants creation without constraint, and she has no shame about what she wants, and will not suffer anyone to shame her. If there is backlash against women, Black Moon Lilith may take a very transformative and powerful role in 2018 when she conjuncts with Pluto and Saturn in Capricorn.

Scorpio New Moon, 26 Degrees, 11-18-2017

Scorpio New Moon

When I draw up charts for these lunations, it comes to pass that some do not have a lot of aspects, since I prefer a tighter orb; this is one of those moons.

Yet, the most prominent aspect for this new moon is quite potent: the Mars-Pluto square.

Currently, the moon and the sun are conjunct at 26 degrees of Scorpio, highlighting Plutonic themes. Mars/Pluto are the planetary rulers of Scorpio, so this means those planets will have the force of the sun and the moon powering them by rulership. Scorpio of course, rules other people’s resources, divorce, occult matters, taxes, death, and sex, among other things.

Mars, the planet of action and force, is in detriment at 16 degrees Libra. Pluto is at 17 degrees of Capricorn, the sign Saturn rules. Currently, Saturn is still transiting Sagittarius in preparation for his move into Capricorn, where he will be in dignity in his home sign.

Any time two malefics are involved in hard aspect, caution is always prudent; here we might expect problems in our relationships (Libra), where perhaps we are too impulsive or pushy with what we want from others and not balancing out their needs, and with Pluto in Capricorn, this may occur in the career arena, in public forum. Libra being the house of marriage relationships as well, can suggest increased argument within marriage, added friction, since the social status of marriage is also a 10th house/Capricorn issue. While some might think the Mars-Pluto square is always a violent encounter, this is not so and one should not worry about trouble that, simply put, has yet to arrive. In extreme cases, Mars-Pluto can be ugly indeed, but most of us will not be extreme cases. In fact, the real danger is overlooking the small things, such as a complaint from a spouse, or a misinterpretation of work memo, which later snowball into big things.

We also have Venus at 13 degrees of Scorpio, also at detriment, trining Neptune at 11 degrees of Pisces, and significantly, Neptune is preparing to move out of retrograde and forward by the 22nd of this month; amusingly, this will coincide with the date of my mead needing to be racked as it goes through its final stages of ferment. With Venus having difficulty with expression in this sign and the aspect with Neptune, there might be deception involved in love or money, and ultimately, the possibility of money flowing away from you, rather than flowing toward.

Mercury too, is at detriment at 17 degrees of Sagittarius. This may add to difficulties with Venus in detriment and Mars in detriment. With these personal planets finding difficulty in the opposite signs of where they feel comfortable, we might feel “off” or lacking harmony in various aspects of our lives. As in all things, this passes in time, and we should do our best to carry on until the winds change.

Taurus Full Moon 11 Degrees, 11-4-2017

Full Moon Taurus

This lunation occurs with the sun at 11 degrees of Scorpio, and the moon at 11 degrees of Taurus, highlighting this axis that concerns itself with resources. For material based Taurus, resources of wealth and concerns of value are paramount; for Scorpio the resources are a matter of spirit and soul and interior spiritual wealth, and the resources of others.

This sun at 11 degrees of Scorpio will trine with Neptune at 11 degrees of Pisces, watery signs both. We may find our deep and intense mood of soul-searching is given a decidedly Piscean favor; we dig into subjects with intensity, not only because we want to get to the bottom of a subject, but because we want to sacrifice ourselves to it, because we want to do it in service to others. The goal is noble, but the means by which we achieve it might be questionable.

Mercury at 27 degrees of Scorpio has also been flavoring our communications and information with shades of the Plutonic. Our conversations will be deep and intense, passionate, delving into gossip looking for clues, or on the other end, we be trying to control conversations and influence others through our speech. Mercury forms an inconjunct to Uranus at 25 degrees Aries, and we might find ourselves with access to important information, but with no means to properly utilize it.

Venus is moving through Libra at 25 degrees, in dignity, and will form an opposition to Uranus at 25 degrees Aries. It may prove difficult to maintain harmony in relationships or marriages when the unexpected and unpredicted needs of others run roughshod over all other concerns. The Aries ego-focused need will be pushy and the Libra polarity will be asked to provide the balance.

Mars at 7 degrees of Libra is in his detriment. It may turn out that being able to complete projects or take action on important matters is hampered by the need to constantly compromise with others.

When I calculate these charts with the open source program Open Astro with Ubuntu, I calculate for a tight orb; thus, some months there are significantly less aspects than others, as I feel the most important aspects are those in tight configuration. This month’s moon correlates to the Taurus new moon of April 26, 2017. It might be worthwhile to take a glance into one’s planner to see what was ending or developing around this time and how it figures into the present full moon.

Libra New Moon at 26 Degrees, 10-19-2017

New Moon 10-19-2017

This new moon lunation occurs at 26 degrees of Libra, the sign of relationships and balance. Our emotional selves and ego selves will be inclined to be more social, touching base with our relationships and weighing how much we give and take in those relationships, both at home behind the scenes and in our more public lives.

Prominently, Uranus at 26 degrees of Aries, the bold pioneer sign at Libra’s polarity, will be in opposition to the sun and the moon, indicating the presence of the unexpected in our lives. An incident might provoke a contrarian reaction in relationships we thought were solid and sympatico, and it tests the boundaries of relationships and marriages and what it means to be independent of those. Uranus wants rebellion, Uranus wants to question, and most of all, he wants to progress us to new territory. We may be forced to choose between the safe comfort of old friends, and the shocking exhilaration of abandoning the status quo to either be by ourselves or to find different company. Or, more likely, our friends may decide they no longer want our company — the choice is not always up to us, and that is the nature of relationships — we cannot control those around us. Uranus has the potential to bring us to a new place in how we relate to people, but the arrival may be shocking and unexpected in its delivery.

In addition, early this month Jupiter made his yearly change through the signs, releasing  Libra to enter into Scorpio. We may find our lives touched by intensity, by uncompromising courage, a desire to do all and achieve more by delving deeply into all we apply ourselves to. Mercury, the planet of communication, of messages, of short trips and siblings, will conjunct Jupiter in Scorpio at 3 degrees of Scorpio, giving all our of communications a new degree of depth — we may be compelled to reveal secrets or others confess secrets to us, we may discover deep manipulation involved in our self-expressions or our conversations with others. Jupiter wants optimism, though, and at worst will blind himself to the dangers of manipulations around him. We will want to talk deeply, magnetically, and sexually, and all things in the house of Scorpio.

Mars, the planet exemplifying men and war, is still transiting Virgo at 28 degrees. Venus has surpassed him, and now he chases her ’round the zodiac, giving a new flavor to relationships between the feminine and masculine. Mars at 28 degrees Virgo squares Saturn at 23 degrees Sagittarius, suggesting our physical actions or health may be at odds with an authority, a structure, or institution. As a for instance, I have a friend who registered for a tournament — and did not realize she would have to submit a blood test! There could be no better embodiment of Mars aspect in Virgo (blood test, analysis) and a Saturn in Sagittarius (a sparring tournament, the tournament itself representing the institution.)

Mars will also form an inconjunct with Uranus at 26 degrees Aries, and so the needs of self (Aries) and the needs of service (Virgo) will have difficulty aligning in a comfortable fashion. If we used the Mars energy in Virgo to pick up new exercise or health regimens, we might have to develop a coping mechanism for Uranus’s nervous energy that threatens to upset our gains. Perhaps it will be as simple as wanting to pursue something, a one-time opportunity, which clashes with our current schedule. This will require some level of juggling on our part.
