The moon joins us at 15 degrees of Sagittarius on June 5th for a penumbral eclipse. This means the very edge of the shadow of the earth falls across the moon, and is far less noticeable than a full eclipse or a partial. A mere brushing of the onset of darkness occurs, and some may not notice it at all.

What does it mean for this lunar cycle and this full moon? While the moon rules over our emotion and private home lives, the sun rules over our public lives of career and social standing from his perch at Gemini, 15 degrees. The 15th degree is highlighted for this lunar cycle for these reasons, as the moon and the sun oppose each other as they do every full moon, and we are caught in the middle of these dual forces — between happy go lucky Sagitarrius who wants to expand our emotional selves or maybe even wants to find a new home base, to quick thinking Gemini who is demanding more of our attention at work as things are ramping up in the outer world, and so are the demands on our focus and ability to communicate. We may be traveling more than usual, which suits Sagittarius just fine, as he’s feeling a little cooped up from quarantine. With just enough Zoom meetings you may be able to keep him chained up at home.

Also at the 15th degree, notably, is Mars in Pisces, where he has been dodging confrontations and hedging bets. He doesn’t want to give anyone firm answers. He waffles between choices and is wringing his hands, a decidedly un-Mars thing to do. Mars is bottled up in Pisces and squaring the sun in Gemini and the moon in Sagittarius. When faced with uncomfortable information from Gemini and Sagittarius, Mars is going to fail to rise to the challenges presented and instead do what he prefers under the cover of darkness. This is a bad configuration for people who may need to make important decisions in the near future. Contracts which were agreed upon will not be broken, but bent and warped to fit someone’s unwillingness to own up to their actions. Get everything in writing and don’t rely on verbal promises.

Add into the mix our lovely Venus in retrograde, combust the sun in Gemini at 12 degrees. Not only is Venus having difficulty because she is in retrograde and our love affairs may be going backwards in terms of progress, our new romances during this period plagued by constant issues, and under the sign of Gemini, no doubt there is plenty of bickering and misfires in communication — but on top of this turbulent condition, Venus is also combust! Combust means a planet is too close to the sun, agitating the other planet so it cannot express well and becomes debilitated. The planet is in essence, swallowed up by the fire of the sun and cannot be made visible.

We’ve already established that Venus rules love affairs, particularly in the domestic role, dedicated romantic partners and women in particular. But it seems here we can wonder if Venus’s combust nature means she is being shoved aside for the sake of someone else’s career, or being ignored by a significant other. In this context, the meaning of being “burned” may become more meaningful than we realize. (Note too, the jump in people trying to escape their spouses during quarantine – from Neil Gaiman fleeing Amanda Palmer, to Megan Fox separating from Brian Austin Green, for a few.)

In addition to love, Venus also rules fortune. We may see loss of money during this period as unexpected expenses are incurred. It would be a good time to go over budgets and double check your resources to see that you have enough of everything, and don’t go spending a lot on all that glitters. You may discover later it wasn’t gold after all.

Mercury has powerful significance during this period as well, since he is the ruler of Gemini, and he is occupying 9 degrees of Cancer this time around. Just as the last new moon was filled with Mercury’s presence kick starting off our communications in the house of Gemini, this one is also exposing ways we can improve those communications and ways in which they have failed us. We are fixing minor issues and issuing corrections for things we said before, a point made strong by the penumbral eclipse. It is not a definitive ending, but a seeking for answers and better changes, of gently guiding our ship right after a slight wander off course.

Mercury’s presence in Cancer is also the house which rules the moon, which means we have the moon in Gemini, where Mercury rules, and Mercury in Cancer, where the moon rules. Mutual reception! Communication at home is going to flow well and swiftly. Use this chance to do everything from going over service contracts, renovations, buyer-seller contracts, real estate issues, marriage oriented plans or pre-nups, and everything in between. With many people still hesitating to wander outside, all text dates or Zoom-only conferences may still be the order of the day, and there couldn’t be a better time to do it.

Jupiter at 26 degrees of Capricorn is enjoying his own buddy comedy with gloomy Pluto at 24 degrees of Capricorn in the house of rules, restrictions, and status quo. Jupiter can’t wait to get away from buzzkill Pluto, but these two are still finishing their own sordid business together. Pluto still harks back to the unfinished business of consequences for actions taken, but since when has Jupiter been one to stick around and clean up after a party? Never. Jupiter tries to surge ahead but he’s tripping over the wreckage he has caused. This is the metaphor we are fighting with currently. Things we did in times of excess turned out to be short-sighted, and harmful in the long run. We see this a great deal with the expansion of commerce which made use of “just-in-time” inventory. Unfortunately, this has caused problems in the food supply when Pluto pinched things, and now there’s a bit of a mess to clean up and people are slowly considering what other options there may be in the house of rules and restriction. Will we come up with new laws and regulations to protect ourselves from this short sightedness again?

Saturn is happily digging into Aquarius at 1 degree. Aquarius was traditionally the house of Saturn before Uranus grew up and castrated his dear father, so in this sense, there is a happy reunion to nostalgia. It’s not Saturn’s home, but the place he grew up. He is, by rulership, lending a bit of his energy to Uranus, who is transiting Taurus at 8 degrees where big changes are afoot. This may mean that Saturn is in the mood to relax some rules regarding the earth where he was once a little more somber in Capricorn — there have already been interesting moves in the stock markets regarding biotech companies and marijuana stocks, something which would very much be under the concerns of Taurus right now, but stocks regard public issues and rules, which Saturn can play a hand in.

Stars By Design Now Has A Video Channel

We posted out first video over on YouTube. The crazy lady with the multi colored hair is me.

You can watch me talk awkwardly on camera about the latest new moon post here:

This is my first real foray, and I’m learning a lot about what goes into making videos. This is just the initial splash, so there’s already a lot of plans to improve things. My bigger plan so far is also to take these videos down once they are no longer relevant, so they won’t be available for longer than a certain period of time yet. I hope you’ll join me in the new part of my media journey!

New Moon in Gemini, 5/22/2020

May 22, 2020, 1:39 pm EST
New Moon at 2 degrees of Gemini
A Flood of Communication

The moon and the sun conjunct for the May 22 New Moon, and outline the beginning of a cycle. They are planted firmly in Gemini territory, and it would be impossible to examine this new moon cycle without also looking to the ruler of Gemini – Mercury himself.

Mercury, for his part, has raced further ahead in Gemini and perches on the 20th degree, where he is also conjunct the lovely Venus, passing through in retrograde. Mercury is granted a great deal of power here, since he runs the mutable sign of Gemini, but the presence of the other planets also offers support to him, from Moon and Sun conjunction at 2 degrees to Venus also conjuncting Mercury at 20 degrees. We should expect this new moon to be all about communication and small trips. The news cycle will reflect this with a continuing flurry of messages which will impact us across every level, from the powers that be (the Sun, authority) to our more personal and private behaviors (the Moon, emotional and home centered).

The Luminaries point the way for us, notably forming a square to Mars, who bides his time in the sign of Pisces, at 6 degrees. This is always an interesting placement for Mars, in the watery sign of self-sacrifice, dissolving, illusions, gambling, and institutions. Mars loses the majority of his assertive self-esteem here, especially since Neptune has been happily dancing through his home sign for a long time now. That does not mean Mars loses his aggression, but instead expresses it slightly differently than normal. People may feel prone to avoiding necessary confrontations and thus abrogating responsibility. Expect passive aggressive incidents where people express their irritation in small, needling ways. Conversely, there may be a temptation to different types of escapism, from those which are beneficial — such as getting lost in a book or caught up in a creative act — to the potentially destructive, such as too much drinking or gambling, ill-timed investments in stocks.

Venus, retrograde at 20 degrees of Gemini alongside Mercury, is going to raise the stakes when it comes to communications between lovers and issues of money. May is a big month for financial quarter earnings in the stock market — things might have to be recalculated and initial reports give way to costly errors. Check your budget more than once, should unexpected expenses arise and cause and outflow of money. On a more mundane level, you may end up having to purchase something new in the kitchen or upgrade your router. Don’t feel secure enough to indulge in pretty, amusing purchases — husband your resources during this Venus in retrograde period.

The conjunction of the Moon and Sun at 2 degrees of Gemini greases the wheels of politics, business, career, and the desire for progress by forming a trine with the three heavyweights: Pluto at 24 degrees of Capricorn, Jupiter at 27 degrees of Capricorn, and Saturn at 1 degree of Aquarius, all in retrograde themselves. The current news as I write this is filtering through of various areas throughout the country reopening after closures from the pandemic, highlighting a decidedly public issue (Capricorn). It should be noted that the trine is an aspect emphasizing speed — not necessarily beneficial speed. So what we will continue to see is a ramping up of the world opening, for good or for ill. Conversely, it could also, at this new moon, suggest that infection rates will also quicken with this reopening. Considering somber Pluto’s tight configuration with expanding Jupiter in Saturn’s home sign, this sounds like the most likely effect of quickening and multiplying influences.

Neptune is planted at 20 degrees – Again, the 20th degree! This harks back to the conjunction of Mercury and Venus at 20 degrees of Gemini, where they also form a square to Mercury and Venus. Tensions will rise as communications and domestic life are influenced and changed by the watery dissolving influence of Neptune, and institutions in general. Many of us have had to engage with the medical industry in ways we did not before, and we are navigating a little differently than we used to, perhaps coming up against new frictions. The square to Venus in retrograde highlights increased expenses in this area. There is a lot of confusion during this time, so you will have to weigh in on Mercury for due diligence, as Neptune may not be entirely helpful during this time.

Uranus remains at 8 degrees of Taurus, squaring to Jupiter at 27 degrees of Capricorn. These two are united in earth signs, but little else. Taurus is a fixed sign and Uranus is dragging the bull by the nose to the gates of change. Another arena where bulls are a big deal is the stock market, of course. We are going to see the square expressed in that arena, where the house of Capricorn (public) and the house of Taurus (material possessions) intersect. While there are murmurings of the decade long bull run in stocks finally being slowed, one wonders if the long term game of Uranus in Taurus will be to reconsider how business is done in the stock market. Rest assured, stocks will be downgraded and companies go bankrupt in an eyeblink, leaving shareholders with nothing.

Lastly, let us visit the north node which just turned the corner from its course in Cancer, and sits at the 29th degree of Gemini. Here in Gemini will be where our challenges reside. We may have to rethink how we tackle communications, and now is a good time to consider how to do this, under the influence of the new moon. Our communications will have more impact as the moon cycle runs its course to completion. This could be as simple and mundane as how you manage your email, the efficiency with which you use messages, how you text, or perhaps a rethinking of the short trips we make for necessary needs – grocery shopping, for instance, has been impacted for many people. Changing our basic habits and routines can be the most difficult thing we do, and communications will be the challenge and the key for those looking for that change.

A Summer Of Retrogrades: 2020

Excited about your summer of 2020! *insert collective groan here.*

Let’s discuss the retrogrades.

• Mercury Rx occurs from June 18, 14 degrees of Cancer – July 12, 5 degrees of Cancer
• Venus Rx occurs from May 13, 21 degrees of Gemini – June 25, 5 degrees of Gemini
• Jupiter Rx occurs from May 14, 27 degrees of Capricorn – September 12, 17 degrees of Capricorn
• Saturn Rx occurs from May 10, 1 degree of Aquarius – September 28, 25 degrees of Capricorn

And at the end of the summer, Mars will also go into retrograde — just in case we were eager to experience normal life again.

We are not including shadow periods for this retrograde discussion.

It is not my desire to focus overmuch on the coronavirus and its effects, but the reality is, not only is it now a part of our new normal and fundamentally altering our day to day lives, but the impact to the stars is real and personal. Life, ultimately, rolls on — and the stars have something to tell us about it.

Mercury Rx occurs from
June 18, 14 degrees of Cancer – July 12, 5 degrees of Cancer

Mercury goes retrograde in the sign of Cancer from June 18th to July 12th. The Messenger will be involved in matters of the home, beginnings and endings, and communications regarding it. This is particularly key given the recent census. Did you forget to fill out the form that was sent in the mail? Every ten years, the government hires people to conduct the census and travel door to door to obtain this information. We can expect it is possible this normal ritual may be altered given our new social distancing restrictions, and perhaps postponed or changed in some way.

Cancer is a cardinal sign and I would expect this retrograde period to be especially meaningful. All the usual issues surrounding Mercury in retrograde apply — avoid signing new contracts, starting a job, be more aware and detail oriented so as to avoid mistakes, spend time to re-evaluate projects and take your time coming up with solutions.

Cancer is not only a private, emotional space that involves the home, it is also rules matters of beginnings and endings. Break ups or more severe schisms can be a part of this cardinal sign, so keep in mind during a time period where many are restricted to their homes in close quarters, frictions may run high and relationships will end.

On the opposite end of emotional issues, it is possible that Mercury in the 4th house will be more literal: your physical house may be going through changes, whether it’s a change of ownership, a stalled sale, perhaps it needs to be redone, re-evaluated, or scrapped altogether.

Given current times, this could also concern rent payments. There is a great deal of confusion going on right now in some parts of the county that have been shut down and hit with the coronavirus over whether rents will be cancelled or merely postponed, and because so many are without work, they are left unable to do so. There will likely still be a lot of back and forth over how to resolve these debts incurred by crisis, and this Mercury in retrograde period will play a role in solidifying an eventual solution.

Critically, during this time period, there will be an annular solar eclipse at 0 degrees of cancer. By rulership, this is the moon’s domicile, where it feels most comfortable and at home, and it means what Mercury does in the sign of Cancer will be under the rule of the moon. Home matters, therefore, will hit us all the harder.

Venus Rx occurs from
May 13, 21 degrees of Gemini –
June 25, 5 degrees of Gemini

Love and fortune in the sign of the twins. Venus goes into retrograde on May 13 at 21 degrees of Gemini. Prepare yourself to have a lot of rethinking and re-evaluating during these days over matters of money and love.

Given the mutable nature of Gemini, there may be a shift in attitudes surrounding loved ones. Perhaps after a prolonged time together, the flavor of the relationship has changed, and no longer suits us. A quick break up would be like ripping off a Band-Aid and allow us to get back to our daily lives sooner, but Venus in retrograde while in Gemini is going to want to tug us between people we love and people who love us. Not a good time to begin a relationship. Expect verbal jabs that erode the trust and companionship over time, or the possibility of a dual relationship.

Venus does not only concern herself with romantic relationships, but also with matters of money and good fortune. Expect investments to go up and down, for there to be confusion in the markets. As stores reopen, there will be a strong pull for the Venus in all of us to accrue resources and feather the nest, but making purchases under this transit may seem like a good idea at the time, and turn out to be buyer’s remorse later. Rather, now would be a good time to park the cash, look over your financials, and reconsider how you’re handling your money. Doing so now could be more fruitful in the future.

Check in on your siblings, as Gemini rules over your brothers and sisters and your general neighborhood. You will likely see shifts in your neighborhood — your HOA may be having some difficulty solidifying plans and maybe they’ll ding you for that tomato plant you decided to grow. Get loud and fight back — they’ll change their minds.

Jupiter Rx occurs from
May 14, 27 degrees of Capricorn –
September 12, 17 degrees of Capricorn

Jupter the amplifier, goes retrograde once a year. Last year, he started retrograde in April of 2019, and he doesn’t get nearly the same amount of fanfare as the smaller, personal planets. When Venus and Mars and Mercury go retrograde, they tend to wreak a different kind of havoc, since their retrograde patterns are more personal to us. But big mover Jupiter still affects us, just not in the same way.

Jupiter loves to go big or go home, and he will retrace his steps through the sign of the goat from May 14th to September 12th. Without any context for our current times, we might suppose that this motion through the cardinal sign of Capricorn means that people will experience bold movements in their career — perhaps reflecting on their direction and creating a better road map on how to attain their next career move.

This will be true for some, as businesses as undergoing seismic shifts in the ongoing global pandemic. Amidst this crisis, which Jupiter was a major player in amplifying during his passage in Capricorn  during January, Jupiter will make everything around us bigger, and sometimes that means badder, too. But additionally, with his ability to amplify crisis, he will amplify opportunity.

The problem with Jupiter being in retrograde during this time of crisis and opportunity is that people will leap in too fast and too intensely in an attempt to make gains for their careers or public life. Rather, this is better for letting those big, juicy ideas come to you, and then give them time to temper. Are those ideas sounding as good the next week, after some time has passed? Run it by your friends and seek advice, as you may need to show some restraint and pull back. Expect Elon Musk to say something ill considered on twitter that frightens and outrages his shareholders. Of course, he does that all the time! But it’s perhaps an example of how Jupiterian hubris can have ill effects. Wait, and reconsider your big plans. It’s okay to go small and test the waters instead of throwing in a Titanic to sink or swim!

Saturn Rx occurs from
May 10, 1 degree of Aquarius –
September 28, 25 degrees of Capricorn

It struck me that most of the retrogrades this summer are occuring within one sign — but now we’re coming to the heavy hitter Saturn, who currently calls the cardinal sign of Capricorn his home and who, in traditional astrology, once ruled Aquarius. Don’t worry, Saturn — in my heart, you’ll always rule Aquarius 🙂 He goes retrograde just as he peeked his head into Aquarius’s house at 1 degree, to go dancing back into Capricorn until September 28th, at 25 degrees.

Saturn has been walloping us hard, between his conjunctions with Jupiter and Pluto during the early part of the year, and he’s really not finished yet. He controls the rules, the regulations, he upholds the law and demands discipline, and he punishes us when we get cocky and forget to do our due diligence.

Saturn also retrogrades on a regular schedule. The outer planets, like Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and Saturn, often don’t get the same headlines as personal planets, and with good reason. Most people’s lives are evolving at a shorter time span. We don’t concern ourselves too much with where we will be 30 years from now–we’re more interested in knowing what things will be like next week.

As a result, Saturn and the other big movers aren’t quite as germane, but they can often be just as instrumental. Another aspect of Saturn not really getting a lot of fanfare for his retrograde motion is that, like Jupiter, it happens once a year like clockwork. These cycles are not unusual for us, and if anything, are business as usual.

Saturn, however, isn’t ready for business as usual. There is something he forgot back in Capricorn. There will likely be a closer look given to any new rules or laws enacted during these past few months, and especially bills that were passed as vested interests clash with the needs of the public. Saturn wants his blood tribute, figuratively speaking, and this retrograde period will be about reeling back any legislation that got out of hand while government was busy during coronavirus.

For us personally, Saturn in the cardinal house of career will be holding hands with Jupiter as well, which means our blunders will be bigger and badder when it comes to our professions. The best advice is to own up to your mistakes and wrong doings now, and be proactive about fixing the problem. Leaders will stumble, and we may see nasty effects on the political end, with legislation being bungled, and people taking the blame for things they did not do or shifting the blame onto others. People may lose their jobs, businesses paused temporarily, and people rehired in the same breath.

Now is a time for testing plans, considering all aspects of a new idea. No “winging” it, as Saturn will be waiting to shoot you down for your crass disrespect of rules and regulations. Yet, how are you supposed to know what the rules are in this swiftly changing landscape? That is the challenge of this retrograde. Things that you thought were good ideas at the time, will need to be re-evaluated later. It does not mean your plans will fail — you may need to modify and adapt.
