The last time we had a similar solar eclipse was in 1979, which touches on the generation born with Pluto in Libra — where Jupiter is currently transiting. This eclipse is one in a long running series called the Saros cycle, going back hundreds of years, but in the short term, many are speculating that the fixed star Regulus which is conjunct the sun and moon for this eclipse, is going to have consequences for President Trump, whose natal Regulus is being contacted. However, I can’t say I’m all that interested in the movements of the government — it’s our personal lives that will be affected as the moon interrupts the light of the sun on August 21, 2:31 pm.
As well as an eclipse being fraught with ages old fear and suspicion, we have Mars nearby the luminaries at 20 degrees of Leo, forming a trine to Saturn and Black Moon Lilith at 21 degrees of Sagittarius . The conjunction of BML and Saturn itself in the happy go lucky sign of Sagittarius is interesting in its own right, and more importantly, Saturn is preparing to move forward. As the sun and the moon join for the eclipse, Saturn is in a similar state — suspended and in stasis. This will not last for long. Once this passes, events will move forward with a dizzying speed. The trine from Mars to BML and Saturn, friendly fire signs each, are going to set off events with a quickness.
When we last had a grand fire trine under the Cancer new moon, I saw numerous people with upheaval in their personal lives and at home. During this solar eclipse new moon, we aren’t dealing with the same extremity of the cardinal sign of Cancer, so we may be able to expect something less disruptive — but no less dramatic! Leo loves the drama of it all. With the North Node at 23 degrees of Leo — the North Node being critical in relationship to the moon, since, like BML, it’s a measurement based on the moon’s orbit and not an actual heavenly body — the north node shows us the karmic direction, our life’s “quest” as we live on this earth. The quest is never easy. With the north node in Leo and the eclipse elapsing, there may be events happening from mid-July to mid-September that are “fated”.
Events that are “fated” are things we do not have control over and come crashing into our lives unexpectedly. In some cases, they may not “crash” so much gently appear into our lives. With Mercury in retrograde at 8 degrees of Virgo, this could even bring people from the past as we close up any unfinished business. There might be bittersweet endings, happy returns, and peaceful farewells. It opens up space for us to perhaps reunite with people we lost track of — or maybe, like a domino effect, something comes to light that changes our life as information is exchanged. This is the nature of unexpected, fated events. Things that happen now may stand to change both ourselves and our circumstances for the rest of our lives. Now is the time to be generous, to assume the role of leader, and invite all the best that Leo has to offer as changes appear.
In addition to the trine from Mars to Saturn and BML, there are trines forming from the luminaries at 28 degrees of Leo to Uranus, retrograde, at 28 degrees of Aries. Uranus will be moving into Taurus in the next year or two, and so as he marches through the final degrees he too, will be tying up loose ends. With the trine to the sun and the moon, fated events may indeed come crashing in unexpectedly, as Uranus is like a lightning strike, unstoppable and radical. In the cardinal house of Aries — more fire! — Uranus’s trine will prove potent indeed. People may be prone to butt heads or argue, especially with Mercury in retrograde and there will be a nervous tension that in its worst element, will seek release through argument and conflict. Alternatively, all this fire in support of Uranus at such a critical eclipse time could give illumination to genius moments as well. Uranus makes us rebellious as we struggle with the anxiety of the sun going dark as it seldom does in the course of our lives.
The North Node at 23 degrees of Leo trines Uranus at 28 degrees of Aries as well, and the North Node also trines Saturn.
We will face up to squares coming in from Venus at 24 degrees of Cancer, to Jupiter at 20 degrees of Libra. This emotional Venus in the cardinal sign will indicate either money or romance issues in our home, private lives, contending with a more public issue among friends. With Mercury in retrograde, there might be a misunderstanding at play, a missed bill that causes our cable to be cut off, or a lover’s spat taken too far. With Venus closing in on the last degrees of Cancer, it won’t be much longer before Venus leaves this cardinal sign for fun loving Leo, following after Mars and swinging by the North Node. Perhaps fated love and good fortune will also follow on her heels when she is done weeping in emotional Cancer.
We also deal with a square from Uranus at 28 degrees of Aries to Venus at 24 degrees of Cancer. As though the square to Jupiter in Libra, another cardinal sign, wasn’t challenging, Uranus in Aries throws his hat into the ring. There will be pressure in these cardinal signs that represent such important aspects of life — home life, friends and family, and our ego-identity. It could be that Venus is also retracing where the Cancer moon from June was not so long ago, sweeping up after the luminary. Uranus gives us the unexpected, so while there may be break ups indicated with Venus in the natural 4th house domicile of Cancer, the house of beginning and endings, there may be love walking into our lives as well. With the square indicated, none of these things will enter in without the discomfort of hard choices, conflict, and other difficulties that must be dealt with.
Lastly, there’s a semi-square forming between Mercury in retrograde at 8 degrees of Virgo, and Venus in Cancer. Whatever problems Venus may be facing, beset with so many squares, communication will be at the heart of all. Whether it’s love or money, there may be a need to negotiate with a light touch concerning sensitive parties, and Venus’s Greek counterpart Aphrodite was said to be blessed with a divine girdle that granted her the gift of flattery. Perhaps that ancient lesson can be applied here. Recognize the good side of people and it may go a long way to smoothing over potential difficulties now and later. Too much criticism will go awry with Mercury’s retrograde position, blowing up into unexpected disagreements. With Venus in Cancer, it can be easy to get caught up in an emotional tailspin. Don’t let it spin you around! Use Virgo’s cool-headed analytic bent to keep yourself on track.
A compilation of the full and new moons of 2018 will be available in late 2017, called Lunations, 2018, which will be made available as an ebook from Amazon.
